Crooswijk, after decades of decline during Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction, became part of the urban renewal programme. The 2004 masterplan provides for a reconfiguration of secondary streets in favour of more spacious urban blocks and streets. Block E and Paradijshof have been further elaborated. In both blocks, parking is positioned along the sides, enabling a green courtyard. In Block E, parking is accommodated beneath a deck at the ends of the block. Between the generous gardens, the courtyard includes a playground. A former factory building with chimney, as a reminder of Crooswijk’s industrial past, forms part of Paradijshof. The retained houses along Paradijslaan now overlook a parking street and a generous inner courtyard featuring semi-detached houses.
