//public space for traditional and innovative users in Rotterdam harbour

RDM-district

Revision public space

A revision of the public space on the site of the Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij was necessary. On the basis of a careful inventory, the adjustments have been developed in detail. This ensured a good integration with the surrounding buildings, some of which became national listed monuments, as well as with the existing situation. Physical measures such as road narrowing, the introduction of new street furniture and several speed humps help to slow down traffic. An alternative mix of brick colours provides opportunities for zoning, using materials that fit within the palette of the original design plan. As a result, users and visitors of the new functions introduced by the Port of Rotterdam Authority can safely use the public space alongside the continued presence of traditional port-related activities.
