//synergy of local cooperative ideas in parametric design for Leeuwarden
Rail & Dock district
conceptual plan
Using a radically new approach, the rail and dock area is transformed. In response to LF18, inspired by Friesland’s past, the plan fully embraces provincial cooperative initiatives
and the strength of the ‘iepen mienskip’ (open community). Through a parametric design process, a new urban district emerges, featuring a fine-grained network of squares, encouraging interaction and exercise. The design anticipates large-scale infrastructural changes. It can function both in its current isolated setting and later serve as a missing link, connecting neighbourhoods and city parks. Cultural program is introduced at key locations serving as landmark. Situated between university satellite sites and between sports park, city centre and train station, the area can gradually develop into a university campus.
